Daniels opts not to run for House leadership
Scandal-plagued House Republican Leader Lee Daniels announced he will not seek another term in that role, which he has filled for two decades. Daniels earlier this year resigned as chairman of the state GOP in the face of accusations that members of his staff had done campaign work on state time. Daniels, first elected to the House in 1974, said he wants to remain a representative for his DuPage County district.
Daniels of Elmhurst says he decided øwith a heavy heartÓ to remove himself from leadership contention to help ensure unity in the GOP caucus.
Mentioned as possible replacements are deputy minority leaders Rep. Tom Cross of Oswego and Rep. Art Tenhouse of Liberty.
Danielsé decision marks the first change in legislative leadership in a decade.
