Pate says heþll step down
State Senate President James ËPateÓ Philip, Illinoisþ longest-serving legislator, announced he will retire from General Assembly leadership and give up his seat. The 35-year veteran Republican lawmaker from DuPage County has been Senate president since 1993 and in Senate leadership since 1979. Frank Watson of Greenville was elected to replace Philip as the head of the Senate GOP caucus.

Senate approves Ryan appointments
Ignoring the protests of Gov.-elect Rod Blagojevich, the state Senate approved appointments that outgoing Gov. George Ryan had handed out to pals and departing Republican lawmakers. Salaries for the more than 20 Senate-approved appointments to various boards and commissions add up to more than $1 million.
